Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with a Rosary and Vigil at 6 p.m., Deacon Bob Zent presiding. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the Mass at the Church on Thursday.
Irene was born on January 24, 1930, in Dickinson, to Frank Jr. and Margaret (Gallagher) Rummel, the eldest of five children. Irene grew up on the family farm south of Richardton and attended St. Mary’s grade and high school in Richardton.
On November 18, 1947, Irene was united in marriage to John Anton Hoff at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Richardton. They purchased a farm south of Taylor, and it was there they raised nine children. In 1987 they moved to Dickinson.
Irene’s unwavering faith was an important part of her life. Irene was baptized, made her first communion, confirmed and married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She felt she had come full circle when she moved to the Richardton Health Center in 2019 as she could look out her window and see her hometown and beautiful St. Mary’s Church.
Irene was proud to be a charter member of St. Mary’s Catholic Daughters. She was honored to have served on the Board of the Richardton Community Hospital for several years. Irene was a prayer warrior keeping her family and many others in her daily prayers. She demonstrated her Christian faith and lived out her marriage vows by lovingly caring for her husband John at home for 14 years after his life-changing stroke. John died August 27, 2018.
Irene always had a large garden and enjoyed keeping an attractive yard full of beautiful flowers. She was known to have a “green thumb.”
Irene was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. She cherished visits with family, friends, and relatives. She was a woman of strength, kindness, and love. She lived her life with dignity and purpose. We love you so much Mom, and you will be forever in our hearts. Thank you for all the sacrifices you made for us.
We are saddened now by the loss of both our parents; but “we do not grieve as those who have no hope” (1 Thessalonians 4:13). They accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and followed His Holy Word. As Jesus said to the repentant thief on the cross, “Today you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). We are comforted and look forward to our reunion with them one day soon.
Irene is survived by her children, Gloria (Harlan) Bloom, Taylor; Linda (Bob) Sprengeler, Cedar Rapids, IA; Neal (Becki) Hoff, Richardton; Ron (Sue) Hoff, Taylor; John (Jane) Hoff, Billings, MT; Judy (Larry) Naumann, Taylor; Marilyn (Kent) Schweigert, Bismarck; Russ (JoAnn) Hoff, Dickinson; and Larry Hoff, Dickinson; 26 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Geri Rummel, Peggy Rummel, and Geri (Harvey) Baer, Richardton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by John, her husband of 70 years; an infant stillborn daughter; her parents, Margaret and Frank; four brothers, Loyd, Gilbert, Dale, and Frank Rummel; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Stella Rummel, Jake (Rosemarie) Hoff, Rose (Louis) Steiner, Agnes (Oliver) Dallas, Clara (Frank) Melchior, Gladys (Marcel) Melchior, Leonard (Leona) Hoff, Mary (Joe) Hammerschmidt, and Lorraine Hoff.
A special thank you to Richardton Health Center staff and residents for your loving care and kindness for Irene. She spent the last six years of her life there and you went above and beyond to make it home.
