Jacob Raymond Herold was born May 12, 1926 on a farm near Lefor, the son of Andrew and Katharina (Dassinger) Herold. He received his education in Gladstone.

Jacob met Dorothy Loretta Godlevsky at a dance and a year later they were married on October 15, 1952 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson. They farmed near Manning on the Godlevsky family farm and on farms in the Gladstone area. During this time, he worked in construction for many years for local companies on local projects, like St. Joseph’s Hospital, Dickinson High School and highway construction projects that sometimes took him out of town for weeks. He also worked on steel building construction where his expertise in finishing concrete was invaluable.

Jacob was a self-taught accordion player, one of his first performances was on the Bismarck-Mandan radio station when he was seven years old. He filled our home with accordion music on many Sunday afternoons. Following retirement, he played at local nursing homes and private events for friends.

Dad enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle, rummy and hand and foot. He also enjoyed board games, like Chinese checkers and Parcheesi. He looked forward to visits from his grandchildren Adam and Laura because they played hours of Parcheesi. He also enjoyed small engine repair, sausage making and woodworking. Jacob was an expert gardener, raising his prized Hungarian peppers and abundance of vegetables that he shared with friends and neighbors. He attended to the fruit trees and the berries that he used in his wine making hobby. He was also a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and the Gladstone Senior Citizens.

Jacob is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Marita (Paul Downey) Herold, Billings, Mont. and LeAnne (Dwight) Sorenson, Fisher, Minn.; two grandchildren, Adam Sorenson and Laura Sorenson; and one sister, Delores Bianchi, Yakima, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings and spouses, Don Bianchi, Mike Herold, Andrew (Mabel) Herold and Conrad (Loretta) Herold. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Thomas Catholic Church.
