James Larry Haaland was born September 20, 1941 at Sisseton, S.D., the son of Milton and Agnes (Stave) Haaland. He was raised and educated in the Aberdeen area until the family moved to Horace, N.D. While in Horace Jim joined the US Army on November 28, 1960 and served honorably until November 21, 1963. He was mostly stationed in Paris where he was able to travel all over Europe.

Jim returned to North Dakota and met Victoria Freed, and the two were united in marriage on April 16, 1966 in Horace. They lived in the Fargo and Horace area where he worked in Agricultural sales, where he would travel often to the western part of North Dakota. The numerous trips and nights away prompted a move to Dickinson in 1978. In 1986 Jim started his career with Dickinson State College and worked there until his retirement in 2008. During this time, he also operated H&H Sprinkler Service.

He enjoyed going hunting, being members of the Blue Hawk Boosters, and attending as many Dickinson State activities and functions as possible.

Jim is survived by his wife, Victoria; their children, Travis Haaland, Dickinson, and Mechelle (Donnie) Talcott, Hazen; grandchildren, Tristin Haaland, Faith Zahn, and Tyler Haaland; daughter-in-law, Christine Haaland; brothers, Milton (Margaret) Haaland, Gary (Jan) Haaland, and Roger (Rose) Haaland; sisters-in-law, Janice Haaland and Joanne Haaland; and brother-in-law, Randy Peterson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Elroy Haaland, Amy Peterson, Ronald Haaland and Richard Haaland.
