James was born in Spearfish, S.D., on December 21, 1949. His grade school years were spent there and in Athens, Ohio. In 1962, the family moved to Dickinson, where Jim graduated from high school in 1969.
After high school, Jim attended Devils Lake Community College, graduating in 1973. That year he joined the United States Navy and served honorably for three years. After his discharge from the service, Jim returned to Dickinson. Because of poor health, life was sometimes difficult for him, and he made his residence at St. Benedict’s Health Center.
Jim was very happy there, and felt blessed to be with so many who became his friend as he made his way through the halls. He greeted everyone, joined in the activities, visited with all who knew him, and brought joy to many with his cheerfulness and sense of humor.
He is survived by his mother, Dr. Winifred Stump-DeLong, Dickinson; brother, Jerry (Sue), Billings, Mont.; sisters, Vicki (Harley) Schepp, Dickinson, Nancy Seybold, Brighton, Colo., and Maridale Sand, Eden Prairie, Minn.; as well numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson.
