Joseph H. Kathrein was born April 30, 1929 in Stark County, the son of Adam and Lena (Ochsenfeld) Kathrein. He started farming in his teens when his father became ill. After the death of his father in 1961, Joe took over the homestead and rented the land from his mother. He saw his family a lot in those days and developed a great love for his nieces and nephews.

Joe and Maggie Urlacher were married on December 29, 1969 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. They lived on the home place and his mother who was living there moved into Dickinson. Besides having a love for the land, his greatest pride and joy were his three children and his grandchildren, something he expressed many times.

He was a member of the St. Pius Verein, and the Eagles. As a young single man, Joe loved doing things with his friends, also hunting, riding horses and bowling.

Joe is survived by his wife, Maggie; three children, Joe A. (Adrien) Kathrein, New England, Mary Jo (Ralph) Privratsky, Dickinson, and John Kathrein, New England; seven grandchildren, Shelley and Justin Kathrein, Levi and Maggie Jo Privratsky, Waylon and Adam Kathrein, and Brad (Chasity) Privratsky; his mother-in-law, Otilia Urlacher, Dickinson; two sisters, Katie Sticka and Clara (Pete) Mesling, Dickinson; and sisters-in-law, Anna Kathrein and Dee Kathrein. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John and Bill; sister, Mary Kaufman; infant daughter, Lena; and brothers-in-law, Bill Sticka and Ed Kaufman.
