John was born to Joseph and Catherine (Henzel) Peters in 1922. He grew up on the family farm south of Richardton, attending country school and then high school in Mott. While in Mott he worked before and after school at a gas station earning $.10 an hour.
In 1945 he married June Schneider. Together they lived on the family farm and later moved to Lefor then Dickinson.
Anyone that knew “Grandpa Johnny”, would say that his finest quality was his sense of humor. You would always see him teasing and picking on everyone, especially his wife, June, his grandkids and great-grandkids. He’d always end with a loud chuckle when his prank was a success.
Farming – a true love of his, spending many long hours from early morning to late at night, whether it be working with his dairy cattle, his beef cattle or grain farming. He would often be found giving tractor bucket rides to his grandkids.
Hunting? You better believe it! You could hear him bragging about the trophy mounts on his Rec Room wall and how he took them “down” with just one bullet, while sitting in his little hut on his farm.
Fishing – Absolutely! He would be found trolling up and down Lake Sakakawea waiting for his famous whopper to grab hold of his line. Many stories are told when asked about the 11 pound walleye gracing his lake cabin wall.
Aviation – You bet! John was a co-owner in a small plane and would love to swoop over Lefor and tease his then girlfriend, June, and make his future father-in-law extremely angry! John would be found laughing and loving every minute of it.
Sports – A guy who attended every sporting event of his kids and grandkids. You could hear his low deep voice cheering loudly from the bleachers.
His hobbies were hunting, fishing and woodworking. He recently finished his final project, an eight foot lighthouse for his lake cabin.
You could spot him anywhere with a can of Coke in his hand (whether it be cold, warm or even unfizzed) and a Hershey bar. Grandpa Johnny with his low voice, his big strong hands and his passion for life, his family, his farm and every animal that roamed there will be truly missed by anyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
John is survived by his wife of almost 71 years, June; his three sons, Gary (Polly), Tim (Mary), Randy (Karla); daughter, Deb (Bob) Rising; along with 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren: Greg (Sheri) Peters and children, Rayden, Kynaston, Brezlyn, and Elkan; Denae (Terry) Eckelberg and children, Madison, Makenna and Macy; Kimberly (Kyle) Larson and children, Caden and Cammen; Mike Peters; Scott (Elora) Peters and son, Weston; Tommy Peters; Brad (Julia) Peters and children, Blake, Jace and Collin; Mitch (Jenni) Peters and children, Quade and Charley; Jayden (Haylee) Peters and daughter, Quinn; Brent (Andrea) Rising and daughter, Marlowe; Dustin (Rachel) Rising and children, Brecken and Tavin; and Jordan (Mary) Rising.
