John W. Gunwall, 91, Manning, died Saturday, April 15, 2017 at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson. John’s Liturgy of Word Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 20, 2017 at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with Fr. Darnis Selvanayakam, MSFX presiding. Interment will follow at the Manning Community Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by Killdeer American Legion Ezra Borrows Post 46. Visitation will be Thursday from 8 a.m. until service time.
John W. Gunwall was born September 29, 1925 in Taylor to Gilbert T. and Tillie (Helegeson) Gunwall. He was raised and educated in the Manning area. John left high school to volunteer for the draft. He served in the Army from 1943 to 1946 and was wounded while serving in France. He received a purple heart for his dedicated service.
John was united in marriage to Julia Schwindt at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Killdeer on September 26, 1946. Together they raised their five children, Willard, Karen, John “Allen”, Larry and Judy. He dedicated 55 years of service in the Manning area delivering mail. In addition, he worked at the Dunn County Treasury, worked as a Sears repair man and custom combined. John was a member of American Legion and the Manning Community Club. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and bingo.
John is survived by his wife, Julia; children, Willard (Danette) Gunwall, Dickinson, Karen (Randy) Roshau, Dickinson, John “Allen” (Nancy) Gunwall, Manning, Larry (Laurie) Gunwall, Manning and Judy Parker, Manning; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and sister, Joyce Clark, Kennewick, Wash.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Forest, George, Clarence, and Harvey; father-in-law, Andrew Schwindt; mother-in-law, Katie Chadwick; brothers-in-law, Bill Murphy, Mike Dillinger, Leo Kuntz and Dan Stroh.
