Joseph C. “Joe” Armbrust, 97, Dickinson, died on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at St. Luke’s Home, Dickinson. Joe’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, November 19, 2024 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Belfield with Fr. Shane Campbell as celebrant. Inurnment will take place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Military Honors will be provided by the Belfield American Legion William C. Blair Post 144. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with a Rosary and Vigil at 7 p.m. with Deacon Bob Stockert. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the Mass at the church.
Joseph C. Armbrust was born July 29, 1927 in Belfield, the son of George and Elizabeth (Miller) Armbrust. He attended Billings County Klym Grade School and Model High School in Dickinson. He went on to work for Northwestern Bell Telephone C. from 1948 to 1951. Joe entered the United States Army on February 10, 1951 where he went on to serve in Korea from 1951 to 1953. Following his honorable discharge from the Army he took over the family farm.
Joe was united in marriage to Katherine Kanski on June 3, 1957 at St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Fairfield. He worked for Billings County from 1958 to 1972 and was a county commissioner from 1987 to 1994. Joe and Kay raised their children and farmed until they moved to Belfield in 1998. He lived at home in Belfield until a decline in his health caused him to move to St. Luke’s Home, Dickinson. Joe moved to Evergreen in 2016 and later made his final move to St. Luke’s in 2022 where he resided since.
He enjoyed fishing and camping, traveling with family and friends, playing cards, bingo, slot machines, and was a member of the Belfield American Legion.
Joe is survived by his children, JoLynn (LeeRoy) Roller, Belfield, Leon (Laura) Armbrust, Belfield, LeEtta (Pat) Krebs, Dickinson, Lori (Ernie Hill)Wagner, Dickinson, and Michael (Amy) Armbrust, Emily, MN; son-in-law, Pete Becknall, Sunshine, AZ; 14 grandchildren, Kristen Roller, Christopher Roller, Laura (Steve) Fetting, Cody (Crystal) Armbrust, Mandi (Mike) Wandler, Josh (Katie) Armbrust, Devin (Morgan) Krebs, Channing (Alyssa) Wagner, Jordan Wagner, Addison Wagner, Caleb Armbrust, Caitlin Armbrust, Colton Armbrust, and Camryn Armbrust; 14 great-grandchildren; siblings, Edward (Shari) Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and George Armbrust, Bowman; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Armbrust, Fargo; brother-in-law, Steven Kanski, Bloomington, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Katherine, on January 27, 2010; his parents; daughter, Sandra Becknall; infant twin daughters, Carol and Loretta; infant grandson, and siblings, Magdaline, Bertha, Anna Marie, Frank, and Marcus.
