Joseph J. Hoff, 93, Richardton, died on Wednesday, August 19, 2026 at St. Luke’s Home, Dickinson with family by his side. Joe’s Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 a.m., Monday, August 24, 2026 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Richardton with Fr. Thomas Wordekemper OSB as celebrant. Military Honors will be provided by the Richard American Legion Theo R. Zech Post 180. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Richardton. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with a Rosary and Vigil at 4 p.m. with Deacon Robert Bohn as presider. Visitation will continue one hour prior to Mass on Monday.
Joseph J. Hoff was born on October 12, 1932, in Richardton to Joseph and Ottilia (Froehlich) Hoff. He was raised and educated in Richardton, attending St. Mary’s Grade School and graduating from Assumption Abbey High School. He later attended Dickinson State Teachers College.
Joe was drafted in the United States Army and served honorably from 1953 to 1955. He later served in the North Dakota National Guard from 1955 to 1958 and the Army Reserve from 1958 to 1961.
Joe married Joan Marie Gress on May 16, 1956, in Richardton. They had eight children: Jolene, Callen, Neil, Nadine, Loren, Ardel, Craig, and Russell. The couple farmed and ranched until retiring.
He was a member of the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association since 1956, a 71-year member of the American Legion, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Joe is survived by his wife, Joan; their children, Jolene (Dave) Rummel, Mandan, Callen (Julie) Hoff, Richardton, Neil (Nadine) Hoff, Glendive, Montana, Nadine (Mark) Haegele, Kalispell, Montana, Loren (Tiffany) Hoff, Kalispell, Montana, Ardel (Tige) Engelhard, Bismarck, Craig Hoff, Bowman, and Russell (Michael Farquharson) Hoff, Smyrna, Georgia; 21 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Cornell Hoff and LaVern (Roger) Reinbold, both of Bismarck.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ottilia Hoff; his siblings, Victoria Sattler, Edwin Hoff, Richard Hoff, Herman Hoff, Donald Hoff, Marie Hoff (infant), and Sandra Skavdahl; and in-laws, Julius and Bertha Gress.
