Joy P. Johnston-Madison, Modesto, CA passed away Monday, May 25, 2021 at Doctor’s Medical Center after battling cancer. Joy’s Funeral Service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, June 12, 2021 at First Congregational-United Church of Christ with Pastor Janel Kolar officiating. Interment will take place at the Dickinson Cemetery, Dickinson. There will be a visitation from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Joy was born July 15, 1962 in Dickinson to Donald and Merry Johnston. She was raised in Dickinson and later went on to complete her undergraduate degree from Purdue University followed by her Juris Doctorate from the University of North Dakota.

In 2003, Joy was united in marriage to William “Bill” Madison. Joy and Bill shared a passion for music and also caring for their rescue dogs. Joy was very well known for her culinary skills, her golf scores, her quilts and her contagious laughter. She looked forward to Mo Band every year and playing small gigs when there was a bari sax needed. Joy immensely enjoyed spending time with her nephew, niece and step-grandchildren.

Joy’s career included being past Legal Counsel for Fisher Industries in Dickinson, Executive Director of the Greater North Dakota Association, Executive Director for Partners in Progress in Ottumwa, Iowa, President/CEO of the Modesto Chamber of Commerce, President/CEO Bristol TN/VA Chamber of Commerce and was most recently working as an Executive Director with the Manufacturers Council of the Central Valley. Joy was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Rotary, MoBand and many other groups.

Joy is survived by her husband, William; brother, Joe (Becky) Johnston in Littleton, Colo.; step-daughter, Christi (Henry) Blaskowski in Hilton Head, SC; nephew, Andrew Johnston; niece, Adrianna Johnston; step-granddaughters, Erin and Breanna, step-grandsons, Reese and Ethan and step-great-grandson, Sammy. She was preceded in death by her parents and step-daughter, Elysia.
