Joyce Ann Carson was born December 19, 1926, the daughter of Herbert and Clara (Neckels) Zubke. Joyce was born in Killdeer and lived with her family east of Grassy Butte. In her early years of life, she was baptized and confirmed at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Grassy Butte.

She attended her first eight grades of school in Grassy Butte and graduated high school by correspondence in two years. She attended Dickinson State Teachers College and received a two-year teaching certificate. Joyce’s heart was that of a teacher, she taught at many country schools near Grassy Butte for five years and the lower grades in Scranton. After teaching in Scranton Joyce moved back to Grassy Butte. Wedding bells were ready to ring, however the Army had their name on Wallace Carson first. Once Wallace returned, they were married at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Grassy Butte on Oct 30, 1951. They soon moved to Fort Jackson, South Carolina and remained there for eighteen months. Upon discharge from the Army, they made their home on the Carson Ranch northwest of Grassy Butte.

They were blessed to welcome the adoption of their two sons, Robert, and Russell. Joyce had a deep faith in God which she instilled in her boys. Over the years Joyce kept busy as a member of Homemakers of Grassy Butte, The Community Club, and ND Cattlewomen Association. She avidly enjoyed cards, puzzles, bingo, bowling and embroidering. The love of her life passed away in 1988. Joyce stayed at the family ranch until 2000 when she decided to move to Dickinson. Several years after moving to Dickinson she decided to make Edgewood Hawks Point her new home. In the last year Joyce had moved into St. Luke’s Nursing Home.

Joyce is survived by her sons, Robert (Brenda) Carson and Russell Carson; her grandchildren, Krista (Zach) Verlinde, Ryan (Nicole) Carson, Amanda Carson, and Johnny Carson; six great-grandchildren; and her sister, Maxine (Leo) Braun.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Wally, on August 26, 1988; her parents; her sister, Lorene (George) Chernenko; and infant brother, Edgar.

The Carson family would like to extend their gratitude to Edgewood Hawks Point and St. Luke’s Nursing Home for their loving care. Along with a deep gratitude to Don and Sharon Zubke for all the care and support they have provided in the last decade of her life.
