Julia Virginia Carter was born September 5, 1946 in Lake City, Florida to John Roger Carter, Sr. and Julia Virginia Revels. She was the fourth child born into the family of nine children. She attended grade school in Florida and received her GED in North Dakota in the early 1970’s.
On March 20, 1963, she married Roy Spencer, a member of the US Navy. During their marriage they lived in Norfolk, Virginia and San Diego, California. To this union, two children were born, Roy Dale, Jr. in 1964 and Julia Virginia, born in 1967.
In 1970, Roy and Julia dissolved their marriage. At this time, they resided in San Diego, CA. After the dissolution of that relationship, Julia met another US Navy member, Edwin E. Holzworth, of Jamestown, North Dakota. Edwin was honorably discharged from the US Navy in 1971. Julia and Edwin were married April 10, 1971 and Julia, Edwin and their little family returned to Jamestown.
During this union, one child was born, DeAnna Gail in 1972. Julia worked at Hi Acres Manor Nursing Home, the State Hospital, and helped work at the family cab business owned by Edwin’s parents.
In 1979, Edwin and Julia’s marriage dissolved. She met Bruce Vogel after the dissolution of her and Edwin’s marriage. After meeting Bruce, the family moved to Dickinson in August 1979.
In November 1980, Julia and Bruce married and Julia gained two bonus children, Teresa and Sarah.
Julia worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital as a CNA and in central supply. In 1981, while working at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Julia suffered a permanent back injury and was no longer able to work. She obtained permanent disability in 1984. In 1987, her marriage to Bruce dissolved.
After her permanent disability diagnosis, she focused on her children, grandchildren and her love of her dogs. She lived her life. Traveled to see her family and grew stronger in her faith and love of Jesus Christ. Through all of her trials and tribulations that she went through, her faith in the Lord never waivered and guided her daily. She was the truest version of a born again Christian that anyone would ever meet. Up until the date of her death, her faith never waivered, she never feared dying because she knew when the time was here the Lord was taking her home.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Joan, Jean, and Elizabeth; brother, Roger, Jr.; two nephews; numerous aunts, uncles; her special lifelong friends, Patti Svendsen and Val Youle; and her beloved dogs, Sandy and Starlight.
