Ken Decker was born in Dickinson on January 11, 1942, the son of Paul and Jennie (Koffler) Decker. He grew up on a farm south of South Heart and graduated from South Heart High School. At some point after high school, Ken moved to Tacoma, WA. He also lived in Glendive, MT and Huron, SD, before moving back to Dickinson.
He worked different jobs before finding his niche in life which was car sales. He worked in sales at most of the dealerships in Dickinson. Ken started at Sax Motor Company in 1990 and worked there for 26 years. He retired from sales in 2016 and then worked as a courtesy driver at Sax Motors. After a few years, he decided to fully retire.
Ken married Marcy (Jung) Schwartz on October 22, 1983. They had a daughter, Lindsey, in May 1984. Ken’s passion was cars. He loved selling cars, restoring cars, and racing cars! He raced for many years, driving stock cars, having won many races and some championships. He also raced drag cars and at the age of 79 raced go-carts. Putting the “pedal to the metal” was his biggest thrill! Ken’s love was chevy vehicles. He owned three different Chevy Corvettes, two of them being red which was his favorite color. Ken also loved Yorkshire Terriers. He and Marcy had two Yorkies at different times-Baxter and Maisy. He loved those dogs, and they always made him laugh.
Ken and Marcy moved to Arizona in August 2023 to be close to their daughter and her family. He started having health problems and they returned to Dickinson in March 2025. Ken loved to cook, enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle, going to the races at Southwest Speedway, going to movies, or watching movies on tv with Marcy. He especially loved spending time with family and friends.
Ken is survived by his wife, Marcy; four sons, Greg (Pam), Jeff (Carrie), Paul, and Stacey; step-son, Rob Schwartz; daughters, Lindsey (Carl) Schafer, and Tammy Decker; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Joyce Kingsbury (Steve Livigni), and Linda (Erv) Hatzenbiler; and one brother, Gary Decker.
He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Pete and Mona Jung; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Ken was a wonderful husband, father, and papa/grandpa. He will be deeply missed by his family.
Memorials are preferred to St. John Evangelical Lutheran Endowment Fund.
