Lawrence W. “Larry” Berger, 76, Dickinson, died Friday, April 18, 2014 at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson. Lawrence’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson, with Msgr. Patrick Schumacher as the celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, Dickinson. Military honors will be provided by the Dickinson Honors Team. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, with a rosary & vigil at 7 p.m., with Deacon Bob Stockert presiding.
Lawrence William Berger was born May 16, 1937 on the family farm north of Richardton, the son of John C. and Beatrice (Bernhardt) Berger. He served honorably in the United States Army from September 8, 1961 to July 10, 1963.
Larry was united in marriage to Marcella Martin on April 6, 1959, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Dickinson. They have made Dickinson their home where he worked as a mechanic in various places until taking a job with the North Dakota Highway Department. Following many years as a mechanic with them, he took a position with Amerada Hess in Fryburg, which led to the promotion to Down Hole Supervisor, a position he held until retirement in the 1990’s.
His wife, Marcella died on August 6, 1991. In retirement he would help area farmers with Anhydrous application for Cenex and various other field work.
Larry married Carol Heble in February of 2000. He belonged to the Eagles Club, the VFW, and St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. He enjoyed farming and ranching, any type of mechanic work, and loved restoring El Camino’s and antique tractors.
Larry is survived by his wife, Carol; his son, Jon J. (Becky) Berger, Dickinson; two grandchildren, Courtney and Brendan Berger; four siblings, Edward Berger, Richard Berger, Victor Berger, and Lorraine Swanson; step-children, Travis, Trampis, Tracy, and Troy Heble; 12 step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marcella; his parents; grandparents; one sister; two brothers; and an infant brother.
