LeeRoy S. Lowenstein, 78, Bismarck formerly of Belfield, died Thursday, March 28, 2013 at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. LeeRoy’s Service of Remembrance will be at 10 a.m., Monday, April 8, 2013 at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, with military honors to follow, provided by the Belfield American Legion, William C. Blair Post 144. Inurnment will take place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be on Monday from 8 a.m. to service time at Ladbury Funeral Service.
LeeRoy Stanley Lowenstein was born on February 5, 1935 in Belfield, one of 12 children of John and Rosalia (Hoerner) Lowenstein. He attended grammar and high school in Belfield. At age 15, LeeRoy joined the United States Army, training as a paratrooper, and having served as a Ranger during the Korean Conflict. Following his military service, he returned to Belfield High School and graduated in 1956. He furthered his education at Dickinson State College on the GI Bill.
In 1961, LeeRoy married Renee McNamara of Watford City, and they made their home in Belfield. He had a deep affection for his hometown and its people. He was a true leader and well respected member of the community. He served as a fair and just municipal court judge for the City of Belfield. LeeRoy volunteered for the Belfield Ambulance service, and served on the Belfield School Board, all while raising a family with love, humor, and a firm “hand and a half”. He spent his entire working career in the Williston Basin oil fields, beginning in the 1950’s, and retiring in 1997. He and Renee then made their home in Bismarck.
He was an avid Vikings and Twins fan, and could often be found enjoying his favorite TV programs on his favorite sofa.
LeeRoy is survived by his loving wife, Renee; daughters, Adrienne (Charles) Runge, New London, Wis., LaRae Lowenstein, Billings, Mont., and Rhonda (fiance Ted Hartung) Lowenstein, Bismarck; a proud grandfather to Brett (Dana Hahn) Poppy, Neenah, Wis., Brandon Poppy, New London, Wis., Ashlee and Jacob Fritzler, Billings, Mont., and Sarah and Ryan Miller, Bismarck. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Faith Bellon, Bismarck; brother-in-law, Carter (Teri) McNamara, Robbinsdale, Minn.; son-in-law, Clint Fritzler; and many nieces and nephews of whom he was very fond.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Darienne Rae; his parents; siblings, Joe, Louie, Marion, Ann, Elizabeth, Laura, Tony, John, Francis, Irene, and Martha; a brother-in-law, Dion McNamara; his mother and father-in-law; and his four legged best friends, Macy and Gracie.
The family would like to thank the staff of St. Alexius Dialysis Center, all the care givers of St. Alexius Medical Center, and all the care givers of Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck.
