Leland G. Schaff, 57, Franklin, KY, formerly of Belfield, ND, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007 in Glens Falls, NY, from an asthma related condition. Leland’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Belfield with Fr. Shannon Lucht as the celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Bernard’s Cemetery with military honors provided by the Belfield American Legion William C. Blair Post #144. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday at Ladbury Funeral Service and will continue from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the church. There will be a rosary and vigil at 7 p.m., Monday at the church.

Leland George Schaff was born January 17, 1950 in Dickinson, ND, the son of George and Mary (Hecker) Schaff. He was raised in the Belfield area having attended grade school in Fryburg and high school in Belfield, graduating in 1969. Leland served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from October 1969 to May 1972.

Leland married Joyce (Larson) Upmeyer on December 19, 1975 in Sidney, MT. They lived there until 1983 when they moved to Columbia Falls, MT. Joyce died on August 14, 1983 in a traffic accident. He later married Jeane Larsen on July 27, 1985 in Sidney.

Leland worked as a carpenter throughout his life. He had lived in Montana, California and Tennessee prior to moving to Franklin, KY. He was working on a carpentry job in New York at the time of his death. In his spare time he enjoyed going fishing and working in the garden.

Leland is survived by his father, George Schaff, Dickinson; brothers, Larry (Vicki) Schaff, Watford City, ND, and Gerald Schaff, Gillette, WY; sisters, Sandy (Dave) Crawford, Watertown, SD, Sheila Schaff, Denver, CO, Connie (Don) Dewey, Helena, MT, Anna (Rod) Heupel, Tacoma, WA, Susann (Keith) Wolf, Belfield, Rose Cusack, Denver, CO, Karen Weinhardt, Gillette, WY, and Sharon (Cary) Decker, Dickinson; brother-in-law, Ralph Hoerner, Billings, MT; step children, Ray, Randy, Corey and Shelley Upmeyer; and special friend, Pam Alvarez. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary; sister, Debbie Hoerner; wife, Joyce Schaff; and stepdaughter, Kelley Upmeyer.
