Leo Peter Sand, 88, of Dickinson, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 5, 2025, in Dickinson.
Leo was born on November 2, 1936, in Gladstone, to Wendel and Theresa Sand. He grew up in a large, close-knit family with many siblings and carried those family values throughout his life.
On July 23, 1956, Leo married Frieda Steckler, and together they had four children Leon, Connie, Dale, and Brenda. On October 9, 2003, Leo married Diane (Dassinger) Nauman, with whom he shared many happy years.
Leo worked for many years as a butcher, a trade that reflected his strong work ethic and pride in a job well done. Beyond work, Leo found joy in the simple things — spending time in his garden, tinkering in his garage, and sharing his love of music by entertaining at nursing homes. He was an avid reader and always had a story to share or a good book within reach. Above all else, Leo was deeply devoted to his family. He cherished every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Wendel and Theresa; his son Stanley; his daughter Connie; his step-son Keith; sons-in-law Rick, and Terry; his grandsons Adam and Jason; his siblings Herman, Tony, Rose, Lester, Joe, Wendel, Edward, Richard, Walter, Eugene, Dorothy, and Kenneth; and many extended family members.
He is survived by his wife Diane; his children Leon (Sandy) Sand, Dale (Tyler Campbell) Sand, and Brenda Large; his step-children Kent (Lisa) Nauman, Kevin (Shelley) Nauman, Kimbra (Mick) Mertz; his brother Raymond (Helen) Sand; sisters-in-law, Roberta, Leona, Eleanor, June and Barbara Sand; brother-in-law, James Dworshak; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will continue to carry his love and lessons forward.
Leo will be remembered for his kind heart, hardworking spirit, and the warmth he brought to everyone who knew him.
