Lloyd A. Hendrickson, 82, Dunn Center, died Monday, January 8, 2018 at his home. Lloyd’s memorial service will be Saturday, January 13, 2018, 10 a.m. MT at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, with Pastor Tim Voth officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service, and will continue on Saturday from 8 a.m. to service time. Inurnment will take place at Vang Cemetery, Dunn Center at a later date.
Lloyd was born September 22, 1935, son of Leonard and Arline (Kling) Hendrickson. He attended eight years of rural elementary school in the Eagle Nest District and graduated as valedictorian of his Dunn Center High School Class of 1954. With the timely aid of a $150 scholarship, he received a rural teacher’s certificate from Dickinson State Teachers College in 1955. After one year of required country school teaching, Lloyd returned to Dickinson State and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1959. His graduation was saddened by the loss of his 14 year old sister, Sherry Ann, killed in a car accident one week earlier.
He taught at Versippi High School and Halliday High School. He also served as high school principal and coached basketball at various levels. He was always interested in the academics of his students and the success of the Wolverine basketball and football teams.
Lloyd married Joann Grosz in April 1965. They became proud parents of two children, Carrie Ann and Alan Lloyd.
Lloyd attended the University of North Dakota and served as a graduate teaching assistant. After receiving his Master’s degree, he spent four years with the Minot-based Community Resource Development Program of North Dakota State University as Director of the Souris Basin Planning Council.
In 1976, Lloyd and Joann returned to the Halliday Public School. Lloyd served as superintendent and elementary principal. After Joann’s death in January 1990 and the earlier loss of his parents in the fall of 1989, Lloyd retired from education in 1991. After retirement, he spent his time helping Alan with the farming and livestock operations.
He was a long time member of the North Dakota Stockman’s Association. He also spent considerable time and effort planning for, planting, and cultivating trees. Some of Lloyd’s ashes will be scattered among those trees and shrubs. The farm was selected as the 2001 achievement winner by the Dunn County Soil Conversation District for its windbreaks and conservation practices.
Lloyd had a lifetime interest in sports having played and coached basketball, baseball, softball, and track. He also enjoyed a good game of golf occasionally.
Lloyd is survived by his two children: Carrie (Brian) Zubke, Dickinson and Alan (Lisa) Hendrickson Dunn Center; two grandsons, Christopher Zubke and Ethan Hendrickson, and one special granddaughter, Jenna Zubke. He dearly loved his grandchildren and enjoyed watching and hearing about their efforts in the classroom, on stage, on the ice or playing field. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Sarah (John) Dagon, Eagan, Minn. and Jeanette Bohrer, Bismarck; and brother-in-law, Dennis (Denise) Bohrer, Halliday. He was preceded in death by his wife Joann, sister Sherry Ann; his parents; brother-in-law, Jim Bohrer; and sister-in-law, Ardelle Grosz.
