Margaret Ficek, 95, Dickinson, died on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson. Margaret’s Liturgy of Word Service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, January 14, 2023 at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with Deacon Ron Keller presiding. Inurnment will take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Dickinson. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Margaret was born and raised on a farm five miles south of Dickinson. She graduated from a rural community school three miles from the family farm. Margaret left the farm to work in Dickinson where the event of her life occurred. Margaret met her life-long partner at a community dance and was soon married. Prior to marriage, Margaret worked at Woolworth’s and Western Livestock. It was at Dickinson State College where a majority of Margaret’s working life was spent as a custodian for 28 years.

Margaret loved everything artistic. She loved arts and crafts, flowers, drawing and painting. Unfortunately, Margaret never had the opportunity to attend college. She would have excelled in arts and humanities, performing outstandingly. Margaret was an avid reader, reading five books a week. Reading was relaxing, as it allowed her imagination to wonder, getting lost in a book for several hours.

A quest for knowledge, appreciating the uniqueness of finer things and respecting differences were what energized Margaret. With a rich inner life and a deep, abiding desire to find purpose in life, Margaret had a keen attention to the world. By nature, Margaret was gentle, empathetic and caring, deeply valuing her beliefs and her connection with others. Margaret was a quite influencer behind the scenes. Always acting with great thought and care, Margaret’s driving influences were altruism, imagination and compassion.

Margaret had a special interest in fashion dolls, creating doll clothes for well over 400 dolls. Her favorite doll fashions were wedding dresses that were always high demand items at arts and crafts shows. Displaying her dolls as Marge’s Doll Fashions, Margaret attended arts and crafts shows throughout the surrounding Dickinson area with her sisters, Maggie and Betty.

Working around the yard and tending a garden were Margaret’s favorite past times. The best time of day for Margaret were 5:00 in the morning when the birds were chirping and the squirrels chasing each other. The serenity and calmness of the early morning hours brought peace and contentment to Margaret.

A devoted wife and mother, all Margaret’s energy and thoughts centered around her family. Unfortunately, her best friend and life-long partner, Laudie, died five years ago in 2018. Sadly, Margaret lost her youngest son, Bob, in 1987, who was just beginning life and had so much life ahead of him.

Preceding Margaret in death were her husband, Laudie; son, Bob; her parents, Theresa and Jacob; four brothers, Mike, Clemence, John, and Albert; two sisters, Betty and Hilda; and daughter-in-law, LaVonne.

Surviving Margaret are her three sons, Ron, Terry, and Gene, all of Dickinson. Also surviving are her brother, Frank, Dickinson; and two sisters, Maggie, Rapid City, SD and Pauline, Dickinson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to donor’s choice.
