Marie H. Wax, 68, Dickinson, died Thursday, May 20, 2021 at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson. Marie’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 27, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Dickinson with Fr. Keith Streifel as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Dickinson. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with a Catholic Daughters rosary and vigil at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Marie Helen Wax was born three months premature on June 7, 1952, weighing 2 lb 4oz., 10 days later 1 lb 9 oz., the daughter of Peter and Katherine T. (Keck) Wax. She was fed with an eye dropper with a formula of 10 drops milk and 1 drop whiskey. She was in an incubator for three months and 21 days before she could come home. Marie grew up on the farm north of Regent by Stoney Butte. Marie attended Regent Public School when it consolidated in 1958 and graduated in 1970 with 37 graduates, the largest class Regent Public High School had.
In September 1970, Marie attended Jack’s Hairstyle College in Bismarck, graduating in July 1971, taking State Boards in August 1971 and receiving her operators license in September of 1971. Her first job was for France’s Beauty Palace in Mott, working weekends for Frances Senn. When she wasn’t fixing hair, wigs, wiglets, she was able to work in the rest of the store selling dresses, clothing, jewelry, etc. Wages were $1.00 per hour in September 1972, Marie worked at Lindell’s, Dickinson, for Lorraine Kuchenski. Later Marie took an additional 300 hours of training at Jack’s Hairstylist College, Bismarck. On November 13, 1972, Marie began working at Midge’s Beauty Salon for Midge Glasser for the next 13 years. In November of 1985, Marie worked for Gloria’s Beauty Shop for Gloria Mellmer until January of 1990. Marie purchased a duplex, converted the east side into Marie’s Beauty Shop from April 3, 1990 to April, 2005. After that she got a Homebound license to do hair for homebound clients and at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson.
Marie joined Catholic Daughters of the Americans Court St. Catherine #323, Dickinson, November 14, 1979, serving on a variety of committees: scrapbook, publicity, whist card tournaments, lunch committees, recording secretary, and attended state and five national conventions: Portland, Ore in 1992, Tampa, Fla. in 1996, Bismarck in 2000, Minneapolis, Minn. in 2006, and Albuquerque, N.M. in 2008. She was also a member of the Dickinson Cursillo since 2000. She enjoyed embroidering state flower quilt blocks at the Bandshell Concerts during the summer, learning how to operate a computer, traveling to Banff, Jasper, Winnipeg, South Haven, Mich., St. Louis, Mo., EWTN Pilgrimage, Black Hills and throughout North Dakota and Hawaii.
Marie is survived by her brothers, Robert (Charlotte) Wax, Regent and Dennis (Connie) Wax, Regent; nephew, Scott (Tiffanni) Wax, Dickinson; nieces, Stephanie Meduna, Jillian (Clark) Gion, Bismarck, Brett (Philip) Kallis, Dickinson and Megan (Michael) Flath, Bismarck; 12 great-nieces and nephews; and one great-great niece.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter F. and Katherine T. Wax; two nephews, Steven Wax and Michael Meduna; her grandparents, John and Theresa (Keller) Keck and Marcus and Katie (Tormaschy) Wax.
