Marie Magdaline Renner, formerly of Dickinson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at the age of 93 at Missouri Slope. Marie’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. CDT, Tuesday, August 12, 2025 at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck with Msgr. Patrick Schumacher as celebrant. Interment will take place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. CDT on Monday at the church with a Rosary and Vigil at 7 p.m. CDT. with Deacon Randy Frohlich presiding. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Tuesday.
Marie was born on October 26, 1931 in Mandan, North Dakota, to Leo and Eva (Kautzman) Kopp. She attended Mandan High School, where she graduated in 1949 and was an active baton twirler who marched in several high school parades including the Gene Autry Mandan Rodeo Parade in 1949.
On September 6, 1951, Marie married the love of her life, Theodore Francis Renner, son of Valentine and Catherine (Bender) Renner of St. Anthony. When her husband was deployed overseas during the Korean War, Marie remained in Mandan. Upon his return, they were transferred to Scott Air Force Base, IL. In 1953, the family relocated to Mandan, North Dakota while Ted continued duty as an Air Force Reserve Airman, was a partner in RK Electronics, and earned a teaching degree at the University of Mary. After receiving his degree, he moved his wife and family to Dickinson, North Dakota.
Marie was an active and beloved member of the Dickinson community. She was a dedicated volunteer for many organizations, including various positions at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary, Friends of the Library Bookstore, Hospital Auxiliary, and ARC Thrift Store.
She had a vibrant passion for life and enjoyed many hobbies, including sewing, quilting, baking, canning, and traveling. She taught aerobics and water aerobics in her 70s and 80s. Marie had many close friends that she enjoyed playing cards with, collaborating on a yearly rummage sale, and helping each other bake for the holidays! Her greatest joy was camping with her husband and children at Lake Tschida. As the matriarch of the Renner family, she instilled strong traditions, focusing on creating memorable holiday celebrations and family get-togethers. Her legacy will live on through her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and future generations.
Marie Renner is survived by her eight children, David (Jill) Renner, Mandan, Michelle Butz, Bismarck, Kathy Thompson, Zimmerman, MN, Michael (Collette) Renner, Bismarck, Theodore Jr. (Kim) Renner, Belfield, Mary (Luis) Mercado, Cibolo, TX, James (Michele) Renner, Mandan, and Jodi Renner (Laura McCarthy), Surfside Beach, SC. She is survived by 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Marie is also survived by her sister in-law, Cecelia Kopp, Auburn, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore; her grandson, Victor Mercado; her great-grandson, Dean Smeltz; two sisters; and eight brothers.
