Marie Makaruk, 97, Dickinson, died on Friday, December 1, 2023 surrounded by her family at Hill Top Home of Comfort Killdeer. Marie’s Parastas and Divine Liturgy will be 11 a.m., Friday, December 8, 2023 at St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Fairfield with Fr. Marty Nagy as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fairfield. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with a Panakhyda at 7 p.m. with Deacon Tony Holt presiding. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Marie Skurupey was born June 20, 1926 in Snow, the daughter of John and Rose (Repetowski) Skurupey in Dickinson. She was raised and educated in Snow area. She attended Snow Elementary Grades 1-8 and went on to attend Belfield High School, having graduated in 1943.

She began her teaching career in Fayette at the age of 19 receiving a one-year certificate from Dickinson Teachers College due to the start of WWII. Her teaching took her to many country schools throughout Dunn, Billings, and Stark County, culminating in 17 years at South Heart School. Marie also spent three years as a tutor at the Dickinson Correctional Facility.

Marie was united in marriage to Ben Makaruk July 15, 1947 in Gorham and to this union four children were born, Marlys, Don, Ron and Tim.

She belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary, Catholic War Veterans Auxiliary, and the Ukrainian Cultural Institute. Marie enjoyed reading, music, and the Arts in Dickinson. Her Ukrainian Faith was important to her. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Marie is survived by her children, Marlys Ciscar, Green River, Wy, Don Makaruk, Newnan, GA and Ron Makaruk, Castle Rock, CO; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; siblings, Betty Kadrmas, Belfield and Cathy Brunsvold, Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Makaruk; son, Tim Makaruk; sister, Anna Dennis; brothers, Walter, Fred, and Tony Skurupey; great-granddaughter, Kaitlin Marie Lenette Hopkins-Hatfield.
