Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, friend to many, Mary Kainz entered into eternal life on January 11, 2021, at the age of 93. Known for her feisty personality, work ethic and devotion to church and family, she will be sorely missed. Mary’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Friday, January 15, 2021 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Fr. Kregg Hochhalter as celebrant. Entombment will take place at the Dickinson Mausoleum, Dickinson. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday at Ladbury Funeral Service with a Catholic Daughters of the America rosary and vigil at 6 p.m. with Deacon Leonard Krebs presiding.

Mary was born on October 21, 1927 in New Hradec, the third youngest of ten children. The daughter of Anna (Jirges) and Peter Ficek, Mary was raised on a farm and received her education attending Catholic school in New Hradec. On June 19, 1950, Mary married Stephen “Steve” Kainz at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in New Hradec. For many years, she was an LPN at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Until recently, Mary was sacristan at Queen of Peace Parish, a position she held and cherished for many years, and an active member of Catholic Daughters of America.

Even to her last days, Mary lived in the family home and was well known for her beautiful and bountiful vegetable and flower gardens.

Of all of God’s blessings Mary enjoyed, she most valued her family. She was extremely proud of all five of her children, as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Grandma Mary indulged the whims of her grandchildren and left us all with cherished memories. She loved family gatherings and especially Christmas where she would dazzle everyone with her exquisite cooking and baking.

Through all of the seasons of life, Mary maintained a zest for life and a strong perseverance. As someone so wisely said, “You have to play the hand you’re dealt.” While on earth, Mary played her hand to the best of her ability and endeavored to positively impact those around her. Her last words of advice are worth sharing “Get on with your life and be happy”.

Mary is survived by her five children: Gary, Doug, Carol Hamann, Jeff and Don (Renita); five grandchildren, Gabriel (Kristina) Kainz, Elise Kainz, Jordan (Melissa) Kainz, Garret Hamann and Kristin Hamann; as well as five great-grandchildren; and one brother Paul Ficek.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve, on June 21, 2008; and nine siblings.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Assumption Abbey, for masses said in Mary’s name, or to donor’s choice.
