Melvin “Mel” was born December 16, 1955 to Harry and Betty (Kuntz) Heidt in Dickinson. Mel graduated from Dickinson High School in 1974. When Mel was younger, he enjoyed playing basketball and as he got older he enjoyed snowmobiling and anything to do with cars; whether working on them, racing them, or crashing them in the derby. Mel was awarded “Best Decorated” a few times on his derby cars. He loved his ‘66 Chevelle, but his blue ‘69 Chevelle was his pride and joy. Mel enjoyed fishing and playing various card games with family. He also enjoyed going to the races and watching the Mavericks play basketball.

He held his family, friends, nieces and nephews close to his heart. Mel was always willing to lend a helping hand and offer advice whenever he could. He held various jobs throughout the years, his most memorable being with Bertram Drilling.

Mel is survived by his siblings, Shirley (Dave) Smith, David Heidt (fiancée, Cindy Dvorak), Elaine Novotny, Jackie (Ron) Schlinger, and Dennis Heidt (fiancée, Amy Reimche); sister-in-law, JoAnn Heidt; brother-in-law, Ron Herauf; and numerous nieces and nephews.
