Nick J. Klemm Jr., 78, Dickinson died Friday November 11, 2016 at St. Benedict’s Health Center Dickinson. Nick’s Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m.. Wednesday November 16, 2016 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Dickinson. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Dickinson. Military honors will be provided by the Dickinson American Legion Post 3 honor Guard. Visitation will be Tuesday 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with a rosary and vigil at 7 p.m.
Nick J. Klemm was born March 16, 1938 at Dickinson the son of Nick and Katherine (Morel) Klemm. He was baptized Nicholas John Klemm, Jr., at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Gladstone. He attended eight years at St. Joseph’s Grade School, where he was also confirmed. Nick loved to be a server at daily Masses, weddings, funerals, and other liturgical functions. He was one of many servers at the Ordination Mass of Fr. Michael T. Krank and Fr. Jacob Schumacher.
Nick attended Dickinson High School for a year prior to attending Crosian Seminary, Onomia, Minn., he returned home prior to the passing of his dad. He then attended Assumption Abbey before entering the military. He enlisted in the United States Army on June 15, 1955 and served honorably to June 15, 1965 at rank of Specialist 5, with his main job was as a Chaplain’s Assistant. Nick discharged from the Army and on September 18, 1965 joined the United States Air Force, serving honorably until November 30, 1975, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant, having served as Chapel Management Technician. His retirement on December 1, 1975 brought to close a honorable 20 plus year military career.
He returned to Dickinson and went to work for Job Service of North Dakota. Following a second heart attack and long recuperation he went to work at Dickinson State College as Office Manager for the School of Business. He decided to attend college as a full time student, in just three years earned a Bachelor of College Studies. Nick went to work at Stark County Social Services and then at the North Dakota Department of Human Services. Due to major health problems, he retired due to disability in 1993. Nick took great pride in his drive to work and do the best that he could.
He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, a lifetime member of the DAV, VFW, VVA, AmVets, and of the American Legion. Nick loved his Catholic Faith and was a wonderful supporter of his church.
Nick is survived by three nieces, Diane Vokal, Bismarck, Cheryl Kasper, Mandan, and Laurie Vokal, Bismarck; Cheryl’s children, Stacy and Brad Kasper; several cousins, and numerous wonderful and caring friends. He was preceded in death by his dad, Nick, Sr.; mom, Katherine Klemm-Pudil; sister, Cathy Vokal; and his grandparents and great-grandparents.
