Nickolas “Nick” Morel, 84, Dickinson, died Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at his home. Nick’s funeral service will be on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 11 a.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, with Deacon Ralph Stockert presiding. Interment will take place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, on Monday. Military honors will be provided by the Dickinson Honors Team following the service on Saturday. Visitation will be on Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to service time at Ladbury Funeral Service.

Nickolas Morel was born November 26, 1926 at Lefor, the son of Carl and Maria (March) Morel. He was raised and educated in Lefor. Nick joined the United States Army on March 30, 1945 and served honorably as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne with General George Patton’s 5th Army, until his discharge on October 31, 1946.

Nick returned to the home place to help farm and where he also drove taxi. He met Elizabeth Hlebichuk of Belfield and they were married on September 21, 1948 at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, Lefor. Nick and Betty made their home in Dickinson where he worked for Defoe’s Garage, Miltee Electric, putting in pump systems, and Kolling Construction prior to beginning a 31 year career with the Dickinson Press.

Nick enjoyed gardening, trimming and cutting trees down to be able to sell for firewood, his companionship with his dogs, and was a man that always had to be busy doing something.

Nick is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty; eight children, Marlo Morel, Christine, Marvin Morel, Dickinson, MarJane Morel, Dickinson, Marlin (Diane) Morel, Aberdeen, S.D., Martin Morel, Dickinson, Marcel Morel, Kingsland, Texas, Mardel Morel, Wahpeton, and Marvel (Lori) Morel, Dickinson; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four siblings, Peter (Mary) Morel, Dickinson, George (Marie) Morel, Lefor, Betty (James) Janes, Broomfield, Iowa, and Catherine Rew, Spokane, Wash. He was preceded in death by two sons, Marty in 2003, Mark in 2005, his parents, one sister, Margaret Birgenheier, and two brothers, Anton and Carl.
