Nickolas “Nick” Schmidt, 92, Dickinson, died on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Nick’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Monday, May 16, 2022 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Dickinson with Fr. Keith Streifel as celebrant. Inurnment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Dickinson. Visitation will be on one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Nickolas “Nick” Schmidt was born on September 15, 1929 to John and Katherina (Elberg) Schmidt in Dickinson. He grew up on a farm south of Dickinson where he worked with his dad and family and later took over the farm. He was in the Army and a member of the ENGR, BOAT, BN, EASR, Fort Worden Washington from 1951-1953. Nick returned from the Army in 1953 and married the love of his life, Frances Barta on June 22, 1954.
Nick had a passion for the land, animals and his family. He raised Arabian horses, milked, and raised beef cattle. Nothing was better for him then when a new life was born and calves and colts ran around the corrals. Auction sales were a favorite get away to find Minneapolis Moline tractors that needed a home. Many of these tractors were part of the field work in the spring, summer and fall. Nick was a very caring man with a BIG HEART. That big heart was for the land, his wife, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and everyone who knew him. Later in life dad found new hobbies in his shop at home and at the farm making rope, horseshoe art, wooden wagons and many other projects we found for him.
He was a member of the American Legion, Eagles Club, St. Anthony Club and Knights of Columbus.
Nick will be greatly missed by his wife, Frances, of 67 years; children, Patricia “Patty” Fuentes, Dickinson, Kathleen “Kathy” (John) Schmock, Great Falls, MT, Gary (Deb) Schmidt, Bismarck and Becky (Robin) Roshau, Dickinson; 14 grandchildren and their spouses; 28 great-grandchildren, plus 3 adopted and one on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents; all of his siblings, William Schmidt, Bertha Staudt, Albert Schmidt, Eleanor Schmidt and Ted Schmidt; son-in-law, Joe Fuentes, in 2008; and many close friends.
