Owen K. Mehrer, 60, formerly of Dickinson, died Friday, April 30, 2010 in Fargo. Owen’s memorial service will be at 9:30 a.m., Friday, May 7, 2010 at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, with Rev. Scott McKirdy officiating. Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery at 1 p.m. MST. Military honors will be provided by the Dickinson Honors Team following the service. Visitation will be on Thursday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., and will continue from 8 a.m. to service time on Friday at Ladbury Funeral Service.

Owen K. Mehrer was born July 22, 1949 in Mott, to Albert and Theodosia (Schulz) Mehrer. He was raised and educated in Mott, graduating from Mott Lincoln High School in 1967. Owen briefly attended North Dakota State University before transferring to Dickinson State College where he enjoyed being a part of the theatre department. In 1971 Owen entered the U.S. Army, serving at Fort Gordon and Fort Detrick, and was discharged in 1974.

While at Fort Detrick he met Leann Van Hassel. They married in June of 1975 and moved to North Dakota where they raised their two children, Katherine (born 1981) and Richard (born 1983). Owen entered law school and graduated with his Juris Doctorate from UND in 1979. He joined Reichert, Howe, Hardy, Galloway and Jorgenson law firm in Dickinson as an Assistant State’s Attorney for Stark County. In 1981 he was appointed the Stark County State’s Attorney and enjoyed a long career in that office until 2006, when he moved to Fargo, ND.

Owen enjoyed being outdoors, and liked to go hunting, fishing and hiking. He always appreciated a good book, chess game or conversation.

Owen is survived by his two children, Katherine Mehrer, Dickinson, and Richard (Alicia) Mehrer, Dickinson; Leann Mehrer; two sisters, Medora Moburg, Seattle, Wash. and Geno (Sherman) Sloan, Mott; three grandchildren, Cole Metz, Robert and Daniel Mehrer, Dickinson; niece and several nephews. Owen was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Theodosia Mehrer. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to either the Dickinson Public Library or the Dickinson State University Theater Department.
