Pastor James “Jim” V. Murphy, 79, Dickinson, died on Monday, December 16, 2024 at St. Luke’s Home, Dickinson. Jim’s Celebration of Life Service will be at 1 p.m., January 2, 2024 at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with Rev. Ed Kvaale as officiant. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Calvary Cemetery, Springfield, Ohio.

James Vincent Murphy was born on February 24, 1945 in Urbana, IL, the son of James Eugene and Alice E. (Thompson) Murphy. He was raised and educated in Lancaster, OH. He went on to  join the Ohio Air National Guard.

Jim married Mary Kathleen Nuss on October 28, 1967 in Springfield, OH and to this union four sons were born, John, Brian, Joe, and Todd. He worked as a manager of General Merchandise Retail Store, as a contractor for the Ohio Air National Guard, in real estate and property management, at Weyerhaeuser Timber Company in WA, and as an EMT.  

In 1972, they moved to Washington State where they resided until 1988 when they moved to Ellendale where they attended Trinity Bible College where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies. In 1992, they moved to Aberdeen, S.D. where he attended Northern State University where he completed his Assembly of God Internship while he completed his a Masters in Psychology. In 1994 they returned to N.D. where  he worked at Evangel in the Christian Counseling Department. The family moved to New England in 1996 where Jim pastored at the Assembly of God Church and served as a chaplain for the Southwest Women’s Correctional Facility and Stark County Multi-Correctional Facility. 

He belonged to the Kiwanis in North Bend, WA . While his sons were in Boy Scouts of America, he volunteered as a scout leader and other various capacities. After retirement, he was involved with the senior citizens in New England, filled in as pastor at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in New England and Zion Lutheran Church in Regent. He also enjoyed model train building, and especially spending time with his family and friends. 

Jim married Cara Barringer on March 18, 2021. They made their home in Dickinson until the time of his death.

Jim is survived by his wife, Cara Barringer Murphy, Dickinson; sons, John Murphy, New England, Brian Murphy, Tennessee, Joe Murphy, Tennessee. and Todd Murphy, Guam, US Territory; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Judith Ann Stenstrom, Lynwood, WA.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Kathleen Murphy, on December 12, 2020; and his parents.
