Pauline Hatzenbuhler was born on August 30, 1922 on the family farm south of Dickinson, the daughter of Jacob and Theresa (Miller) Hatzenbuhler. She was raised and educated in the Frenzel School District, located south of the farm. She also attended nursing school in Rochester, Minnesota but was unable to receive a degree due to going back to help at the family farm during the Depression.

Pauline was united in marriage to Joseph “Joe” Greff on April 16, 1945 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dickinson. Their marriage was blessed with six children, Alice, Beverly “Bev,” Jerome, Ron, Don, and Jean.

Pauline retired from Dickinson Nursing Home after 30 years of employment on August 30, 1985. She was an avid quilt maker and gardener. She loved sewing, baking, cooking, and crafting. You would often find her creations at the Trinity Mardi Gras Carnival. She only had two house rules. ‘The doors are always open’ and ‘don’t knock, just walk right in.’ The open doors included the fridge and cupboard whether you were hungry or not. She loved to share her life experiences, was always willing to give advice, and help others whenever she could.

Pauline is survived by her children, Jerome (Lanell), Ron, Don (Brenda), and Jean Akers; sons-in-law, Francis Kolling and John Grinsteinner; grandchildren, Doug (Liz), Bruce, Paul (Lori), Howard (Jennifer), Kelly (Dennis), Erin (Buck), Jerrod, Nola (Kevin), Christina (Andrew), Jennifer, Michelle (Donnie), Tyler, Justin (Lindsey), and Jocelyn (Brady); many great and great- great-grandchildren; brother, Frank (Julie) Hatzenbuhler; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph “Joe”; parents, Jacob and Theresa; daughters, Alice Kolling and Bev Grinsteinner; son-in-law, Larry “Pete” Akers; grandson, James “Jim”; great-granddaughter, Jaide Tosseth; siblings and in-laws, John (Mary), Albert (Opal), Hilda (Ray) Conner, Clement (Betty), Betty (Albert) Marsh, Maggie (Louie) Pribyl, Margaret (Laudie) Ficek, and Mike (Leona) Hatzenbuhler.

A special thank-you to St. Benedict’s for taking such great care of our Mom.
