Dick Horn was born Richard William Horn on January 26, 1936 to Martis P. Horn and Catherine (Phillips) Horn in Bertha, MN. He was baptized on June 28, 1936 in Bartlett Township, MN. Dick was the youngest out of 12 children, with his oldest brother being 30 years older than he. He grew up with his nieces and nephews who were near his same age. He was raised on a small farm near Verndale, MN. After graduation he entered the Military, having joined the Army in January of 58, serving 2 years, 11 months and 14 days. Of that time all but 10 months were overseas. Dick was proud that he was part of the 7th Cavalry and he earned an expert infantry badge and good conduct medal.
After he left the service he worked for various construction companies. This brought him to New England where he met the love of his life and married Sharon Roe in December of 1962. With this union there were three children, Kenneth and then they had a loss and later on Annette. Dick and Sharon later divorced, however stayed great friends until her passing in 1997. Dick finally retired five years ago. He was definitely the epitome of a hard working man.
Dick shared his love for horses with his daughter, Annette and his love for hunting and fishing with his son Kenny and Grandson Josh.
He made many lifelong friends along his journey and there weren’t too many people that he did not accept. He has many surrogate children and grandchildren and everyone was welcome into his home. He especially loved it when his “girls” would be there, (Annette’s life long friends). He kept in touch at least monthly with an Army buddy, Walt Haney “Doc” and they managed to get together a few times over the years. Dick and his best friend “Digger” would go to rodeos together and spent holidays going to Buffalo Gap to Ole’s for his holiday spread. Dick and Buck Striebel loved to hunt and fish together and there were way too many adventures to mention here. The Striebel’s are for sure a second family to the Horn family.
He was an avid bowler and golfer in his younger years, and he loved to read Louis L’Amour books.
On June 6, 2025 Dick went to his final rodeo with his family at his side. He will be missed by so many.
Dick is survived by his son, Kenny; daughter, Annette, both of New England; grandson, Josh Thomas, Bismarck; granddaughter, Jada Munro, Ashland NE; great-grandchildren: Kaden, Aliyah, Adi, Jace and Paisley; several nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Karen Frank, New England.
He was preceded into death by his wife, Sharon; his parents; all of his siblings; and several nieces and nephews.
Honorary Pallbearer: Dennis “Digger” Degenstein, Walt “Doc” Haney, Dale Schatz, Pete Peterson, Dale Peterson, Ole Goldberg, and Buck Striebel.
