Robert S. “Schmitty” Schmidt, 85, Dickinson, died Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at CHI St. Alexius, Bismarck. A rosary & prayer service with Deacon Ron Keller presiding will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 13, 2016 at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, followed by military honors provided by the Dickinson Honors Team. Interment will take place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service.
Schmitty was born July 3, 1930 at Glendive, Mont., the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Fetter) Schmidt. The family moved to Dickinson, where he was raised and educated, graduating from Dickinson High School. He joined the United States Navy and served honorably from July 7, 1952 until March 12, 1954.
On June 6, 1953 he was united in marriage to Frances Privratsky. Schmitty worked for the United States Postal Service for 35 years.
Schmitty is survived by his wife, Frances; their two children, Patti (Darrell) Tooley, Dickinson, and Tom (Joy) Schmidt, Dickinson; seven grandchildren, Chad (Rosalia) Schmidt, Bo Schmidt, Bridgette Schmidt, Shane (Sarah) Steckler, Nickie Steckler, Laura Baggatta, and Jennifer Baggatta; nine great-grandchildren; and very special friends, Dave and Marge Hitchrick. He was preceded in death by his parents.
