Roger C. Buckman was born to Lewis and Bonnie on June 24, 1959. He was the fourth oldest of eight brothers and two sisters. He grew up on the family dairy farm south of Belfield which was where he learned his strong work ethic. The daily chores of milking the cows, tending to the crops, and caring for the rest of the livestock were split among him and his siblings. During that time, Roger also attended Belfield High School and graduated in the spring of 1977.

Roger married Jeanette Ewoniuk in November of 1980. This marriage produced four children and six granddaughters that were the light of his eyes. Their accomplishments brought so much joy and happiness to his life. Roger was always one to put his family first, showing up with a big smile on his face and his heart of gold.

Right after high school, he went directly into the oilfield for work and never left. This led him to gaining a vast level of knowledge in industry as well as lifelong relationships. In his most recent position at ND Energy, he truly enjoyed sharing his knowledge with his co-workers in more of a supervisor role, but he never turned down the chance to put his hand on that brake handle.

When he wasn’t working, Roger would spend his time hunting, fishing, camping, riding motorcycles, and spending time with his family. He spent many weekends in his earlier years either at the lake fishing and water skiing or in the mountains hunting for elk. After he sold his boat, Roger started passing on his love for hunting to his children, nieces, and nephews. It was rare that he wasn’t able to fill his buck tag or limit out on roosters even if the weather conditions or terrain weren’t the most favorable.

Roger was also natural when it came to working with horses. Growing up, he spent a lot of time with his siblings training horses to use on the farm. That eventually led to them training horses for others who lived around the area and Buckman Horse Breaking was formed. Roger took every chance he had to share this passion with his own children which led to many long days and late nights spent on the back of a horse.

Later in life, Roger was able to come back to his love for cattle but not in the dairy business. Along with his youngest daughter, they began running a cow/calf operation of beef cattle. While he left the cold weather calving to Candice, he always made sure the fences were mended, the water tanks were full, and the hay equipment was ready to roll.

Roger is survived by his children, Karen (Clint), Jason, and Candice; six granddaughters, Alyssa, Jaelyn, Danielle, Nevaeh, Faith and Aria; his mother, Bonnie; brothers, John (Teresa), Ern (Nell), Ron (Shirley), David (Stacy), Curt (Cindy), Jed, Ed (Karla) and sisters, Tammy (Morry) and Deb; sister-in-law, Marcy; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Jeremy; father, Lewis; and brother, Richard.
