Rose M. Schmidt was born December 1, 1924 to Peter and Magdalena (Dassinger) Schmidt. She grew up on the family farm eight miles southeast of Dickinson, where she attended rural school. She then went on to attend and graduate from Dickinson State Normal School. She taught in several area one room country schools.

She married Victor W. Dvorak on June 6, 1951 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Dickinson. She continued to teach for several years before starting to raise her family.

Rose loved gardening and had two very huge gardens. She would give away her vegetables to anyone who wanted or needed them. Her husband and children were her first priority, and then her garden, because her garden fed her family. She also raised chickens, geese, and ducks. She sold eggs, chickens and geese to local area residents to buy clothing and Christmas presents for the family.

Rose loved her children and grandchildren. She always gave them a bucket of cookies or doughnuts to take home with them, when they came to visit. She loved it when all the children came home to visit, and especially loved the holidays, where she would put on a feast. Her homemade chicken noodle soup, oatmeal pie, apple dumplings and apple slab pie were special.

Rose was a member of the Catholic Daughters and St. Anne’s Altar Society, as well as a lifelong member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.

Rose is survived by her ten children, Victor F. (Lynn), New England, Lena (Brad) Greff, Mott, Adrian (Linda) Bismarck, Barbara (Steve) Stegmiller, Mandan, Veronica (Steve) Sullivan, Oklahoma City, Okla., Teresa (Stuart) Nielsen, New England, Loretta (Steve) Maher, Mandan, Lawrence, Bismarck, Lydia (John) Estep, Wheeling, W. Va., and Lester (Rhonda), Dickinson; 35 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor, on February 13, 2012; her parents; one daughter, Rosalie; one infant son, Arnold; one daughter-in-law, Brenda; three brothers, Lawrence, Frank and Victor; and one sister, Helen Foreman.
