Selma I. Schmidt, 93, Dickinson, died Friday, May 24, 2019 at St. Luke’s Home, Dickinson with family by her side. Selma’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with Msgr. Patrick Schumacher as the celebrant. Interment will take place at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Belfield. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, with a rosary & vigil at 7 p.m.

Salome I. Hecker was born September 12, 1925 at Dickinson, the daughter of Michael and Elizabeth (Friedt) Hecker. She was raised and educated in Dickinson until she was 15, at which time she went to Merrill, Wisc., and completed her education. Selma moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where she taught school for four years. She returned to North Dakota and spent the next four years teaching.

Selma met John Schmidt in 1951 and they were united in marriage on June 3, 1952 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Belfield. To this union four children were born, Stephanie, Ray, Jolayne and Julie. Together they farmed south of Belfield until the early 1980’s. In the earlier years they also did custom combining. Selma then began a 21 year career with the post office. They moved to Dickinson in the early 1980’s and her husband John died on December 27, 1988.

She was involved in the Germans from Russia, was an avid reader, loved quilting and volunteering, visiting and having family over for special occasions where she cooked traditional German meals.

Selma is survived by three children, Stephanie Moss, Dickinson, Jolayne (Dale) Miller, Dickinson, and Julie Schmidt, Bismarck; six grandchildren, Chris (Tina) Miller, Casey (Amber) Miller, Lisa Urban, Stephen Moss, Aaron (Melissa) Moss, and Levi Ellingson; six great-grandchildren, Liberty, Falicidy, Halo, Amica, Saraya, and Aden; brother, Albert Hecker, Baker, Mont.; brother-in-law, Ivan Cady, Rochester, Minn.; and sister-in-law, Caroline Hecker, Dickinson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; son, Ray; 10 siblings; and son-in-law, Bruce Moss.
