Silas W. Nelson, 90, Dunn Center, ND, died Thursday, July 5, 2007 at the Hill Top Home of Comfort, Killdeer. Funeral services for Silas will be at 1 p.m., Monday, July 9, 2007 at Normanna Lutheran Church, Dunn Center, with Rev. Steven Schou officiating. Interment will follow at Emerson Cemetery south of Dunn Center. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. There will be a prayer service and time of sharing at 2 p.m., Sunday at Ladbury Funeral Service.
Silas W. Nelson was born July 5, 1917 near Emerson, ND, the son of Fred B. and Annie (Flatten) Nelson. He was raised and educated in the Emerson area. Silas worked for several area farmers and had also participated in the CCC’s.
Silas married Rose Martian on August 14, 1943 in Killdeer. Together they farmed and ranched in the Emerson area until retiring into Dunn Center, ND in 1991. Silas became a resident of the Hill Top Home of Comfort in 2002.
Silas loved playing cards with his family and friends, and he was a master at Pinochle. He also fished, hunted, trapped and was the all around handyman. He also raised honeybees and served on the Bailey School Board for several years.
Silas will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rose; their six children, Connie (Ron) Stroh, Glendive, MT, David (Janice) Nelson, Dickinson, ND, Debbie (Will) Dukart, Stevensville, MT, Carla (Glen) Scott, Manning, ND, Phyllis Nordeng, Watford City, ND, and Rhonda (Phil) Eppler, Gladstone, ND; 17 grandchildren, Randy, Greg and Travis Stroh, Doug and Jim Nelson, Deanna (Mike) Davenport, Ondrea (Scott) Knickerbocker, Diana (Roger) Patty, Ben Dukart, Kyle (Denyse) Scott, Kim (Ken) Biffert, Glenda (Neil) Feist, Rena (Ryan) Zimmermann, Sy Nordeng, Amanda, Andrew and Luke Eppler; 11 great-grandchildren, Sage, Jacob and Colt Stroh, Johnathan and Miquela Scott, McKenzie Davenport, Rebecca Biffert, Patrick Feist, Megan, Emily and Morgan Knickerbocker; and one brother, Fergus (Elizabeth) Nelson, Manning, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents, twin infant daughters, five brothers, and Ron Nordeng.
