Steve Kainz, 80, Dickinson, ND, died Saturday, June 21, 2008 at his home. Steve’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 26, 2008 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson with Fr. Jeff Zwack as the celebrant assisted by Deacons Jerry Volk and Kris Ringwall. Entombment will follow at the Dickinson Mausoleum with military honors provided by the Veterans Drill Team. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday at Ladbury Funeral Service and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. There will be a rosary and vigil at 7 p.m., Wednesday at Ladbury Funeral Service with Deacon Jerry Volk presiding.

Stephen E. Kainz was born November 14, 1927 on the family farm north of Richardton in Dunn County of North Dakota. He was the son of Anton and Anna (Karadenski) Kainz. He was raised on the farm and received his education attending country school.

Steve married Mary Ficek on June 19, 1950 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in New Hradec, ND. They have made Dickinson their home where they raised five children.

Steve enlisted in the United States Army and served honorably to his discharge in 1946. He returned home and attended Model High School and Dickinson State Teachers College. Steve worked at Lee’s Garage, Lindy Winky Bootery, and the S & L Store prior to joining the Fad Store. Steve became a partner in the Fad in 1967 and from 1982 to his retirement in 1993 he had served as President.

Steve was involved for many years with the Boy Scout Troop 35, also involved in the Chamber of Commerce, was a ticket seller for the Home on the Range, and volunteered with AARP tax aid preparations for several years. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and working in the garden.

Steve is survived by his wife, Mary; their five children, Gary Kainz, San Diego, Calif., Douglas Kainz, Dickinson, Carol Hamann, San Antonio, Texas, Jeffrey Kainz, Dickinson, and Donald (Renita) Kainz, Aberdeen, S.D.; five grandchildren, Gabriel (Nina) Kainz, Elise Kainz, Jordan Kainz, Garret (Anne) Hamann and Kristin Hamann; and two sisters, Rose (Don) Westmark, Bellevue, Wash., and Florence (Elwood) Schabell, Rochester, Wash.. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and five brothers. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Dickinson Catholic Schools or to the donors choice.
