Terry Kay Buchholz, 72, passed away in the early morning hours on Saturday, July 26, 2025, surrounded by family after suffering from Marfan induced Dementia. Terry’s Celebration of Life Service will be held in the Black Hills of South Dakota on Saturday, September 27, 2025.
Terry Smith was the third of five children, born in Rapid City, SD to William and Freda (King) Smith. She grew up in Rapid City where she attended elementary, middle and high school. At the age of 16, she attended Job Corp in Missouri.
Terry married her first husband, Donald “Don” Goodrich in 1970 in Custer, SD. After marriage they moved several places including Montana and Washington where they had one daughter, Shelly Goodrich in 1973. After her divorce from Don, Terry moved to Newcastle, WY where she went on to earn her GED in 1980 and met her second husband, Thomas “Tom” Murray. She became a widow in 1984. Following Tom’s death, Terry moved to Custer, SD where she was a cook in a small café for 20 years.
In 1988 Terry married Robert “Bob” Buchholz, but separated several years later. Terry lived in Custer until Shelly graduated high school in 1992 and then moved to Nebraska for a short period of time before moving back to Custer. In 1994, Terry met the love of her life, Everett Balgheim to whom she would spend over 30 years with. In 1995, Terry’s twin granddaughters were born, Shelly would move to Rapid City to be closer to family and Terry joined her shortly thereafter. She followed Shelly to Missouri in 2000 to help care for her granddaughters while Shelly attended graduate school. Once her granddaughters began elementary school in Missouri, Terry, attended two semesters of college. When Shelly graduated in 2004, Terry followed Shelly and moved to Dickinson.
In 2009, Terry and Everett moved back to Rapid City to enjoy the beautiful hills. In 2017, Terry and Everett made the decision to be closer to Shelly and four grandchildren and moved back to Dickinson. Shortly after moving back, Everett became ill with Myelodysplastic Syndrome a rare pre-leukemia. Everett fought hard for six years until he passed away in November 2022. After Everett’s passing, Terry’s health began declining, she developed an incredibly special relationship with her two grandsons, Talon and Ryker. Ryker would often help her with household chores, and grocery shopping and when Talon got his license he would stop in to check on her. In January she moved to Benedictine Living Community where she lived until she passed away.
Terry was a family woman and took great pride in her daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved her siblings, nieces, and nephews. Having a very special bond with her sister, Charlotte and found a lot of comfort visiting with her often. She loved playing on her computer, playing cards/dominos, and most especially gambling. In her younger years, she always had a smoke in one hand and a Pepsi in the other. Terry was a fighter, and stubborn, but filled a room with so much love and laughter. She was the glue to her family and will be missed by many.
Terry is survived by her daughter, Shelly (Joshua) Hall, Dickinson; granddaughters, Lexie (Nathan) Smith, Dickinson and Cassi (Derek) Hugelen, Dickinson; grandsons, Talon and Ryker Hall, Dickinson; great-granddaughters, Remington Smith (6) and Taytum Hugelen (6); great-grandsons, Waylon Smith (4), Huxton Smith (3), Tescher Hugelen (3), Trypp Hugelen (2), and Dutton Smith (8 months); sisters, Charlotte Jennings, Box Elder, SD and Yvonne Ziolkowski, Watertown, SD; brother, Dale Smith, Rapid City, SD; five nieces, four nephews; and many great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her infant son; husband, Thomas Murray (1984); loving partner, Everett Balgheim (2023); father, William Smith (1991), mother, Freda Smith (2022); and sister, Mary Lammert (2016).
