Viola “Olie” Mae (Stang) Nester, 99, New England, died on Friday, October 7, 2022 at Western Horizons Care Center, Hettinger. Viola’s Funeral Service will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, October 13, 2022 at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church, New England with Rev. Elizabeth Parks officiating. Interment will take place at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Cemetery, New England. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Olie was born on May 11, 1923, in rural Hettinger County. She was the daughter of Frank and Lydia (Sommerfield) Stang. She was raised and educated in the area, graduating in May of 1941 from Mott High School. She went to Community College in Dickinson. She taught two years at the Teepee Butte School and two years at the Wagendorf #1 School.

Olie was united in marriage to Elmer Wm. Nester on October 24, 1947 at Peace Lutheran Church. They raised their three children (Merwin, Lowell and Kirk) on the family farmstead and moved to New England when Kirk began Confirmation in 1974. She lived in the city moving to a nursing facility in Mott in April of 2016. In July of 2022, Olie moved to Western Horizons Care Center in Hettinger.

She was a member of Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church and loved flowers and gardening.

Olie is survived by her two sons, Lowell of Reeder and Kirk of New England; two grandchildren, Nicole (Keith) Soland of Fargo and Scott (Tami) Nester of Fargo; four great-grandsons, Tanner, Mason and Devin Nester of Fargo and Josh Johnson of Fargo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer, on April 18, 1982; her son, Merwin, on March 22, 2005; all of her siblings and their spouses, Gladys (Bill) Lobsinger, Willard (Louise Brugamyer) Stang, Estella (Pete) Reith, Leonard (Lorraine Hoffer) Stang, Janice (Tony) Pachl; four nephews and four nieces.
