Virgil Mayer, 80, Dickinson, died Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at the St. Luke’s Home, Dickinson. Virgil’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with Msgr. Patrick Schumacher as the celebrant. Inurnment will follow at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a rosary and vigil at Ladbury Funeral Service with Deacon Bob Zent presiding.
Virgil Frank Mayer was born September 3, 1937 in Regent, son of John and Elizabeth (Jung) Mayer. He was raised and educated in the Regent area. Following graduation from high school he helped on the family farm and also the neighbors farm.
Virgil was united in marriage to Dorothy Bren on February 4, 1967 in Dickinson. He attended and graduated from Barber School and also later had received a certificate for welding. During his lifetime, he worked at Dickinson Lumber, and most recently at Community Action. He also helped at Snyder Repair in Belfield.
He loved spending time at the farm with his grandchildren and going hunting and fishing. He enjoyed building things out of wood and on any nice day you would find him fishing.
Virgil is survived by his daughter, Margo (Keith) Redman, Hebron; grandchildren, DJ (Mandy) Snyder, Belfield, Sherrena (Chris Evoniuk) Freeburg, Belfield, Steaddmann Snyder, Hebron, Melannie Snyder, Hebron, Dustin Freeburg, Dickinson; six great-grandchildren, Charity, Katrina, Samara, Dante, Kaytlin, and Jiraiya; siblings, Delores Kranz, Dickinson, Grace Davenport, Mandan, Marcus Mayer, California, and Herman Mayer, Alaska.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy on February 1, 2005; his parents; brothers, Peter Paul, Alfred, and Arnold Mayer; sisters, Helen Bartow, Marie Hofer, Esther Mayer; and son-in-law, Darrell Snyder.
