Virginia L. Tachenko, 91, Grassy Butte, died Monday, February 10, 2020 at Hill Top Home of Comfort, Killdeer. Per Virginia’s wishes there will be a private family graveside service at the Grassy Butte Seventh Day Adventist Cemetery.

Virginia Lee Stroh was born March 4, 1928 in Lincoln, Neb., the daughter of Henry and Rose (Mechalke) Stroh. When she was a young child, her family moved to Portland, Ore. where she attended school.

Virginia married Virgil Anderson and within one year, he died as a result of an accident in Portland.

Following her husband’s accident, she moved to Greeley, Colo. and while there she met Steve Tachenko. Following a short courtship, they were married on August 28, 1949 in Greeley. They moved to the family ranch near Grassy Butte where they ranched and raised their family.

She was a member of the Grassy Butte Seventh Day Adventist Church. She enjoyed oil painting, painting china, working on crafts, gardening and decorating the house.

Virginia is survived by her daughters, Rita Smith, Grassy Butte and Cheryl (Bruce) Buckley, Southern Pines, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Jan (Jim) Abernethy, Littleton, Colo.; six grandchildren, Adam Smith, Margo Smith, Seth Buckley, Grant (Mary) Buckley, Luke (Catey) Tachenko-Abernethy and Chloe´ Abernethy; and two siblings, Jo Mueller, Lake Oswego, Ore. and William “Bud” (Flory) Stroh, Gresham, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve, on September 5, 2013; and her son, Jeff Tachenko on September 21, 1998.
