Virginia was born on October 29, 1939 in Belfield. She graduated from Belfield High School at the age of 17. She attended St. Alexius School of Nursing in Bismarck, earning her degree as a Registered Nurse in 1960.

She loved her time caring for babies in the pediatric and NICU wards of St. Alexius Hospital.

Virginia married Wilfred “Willie” Mastel on October 7, 1961 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bismarck. They moved to Dickinson, where they operated Furniture City. Virginia was a homemaker, full-time mother and avid volunteer. For many years, she volunteered at Right to Life organizations, Mandaree summer camp, and St. Vincent de Paul food pantry while wintering in Arizona.

Virginia had a green thumb for vegetable and flower gardens, as well as indoor plants. Her favorite place was in the garden, enjoying God’s creation – especially the wildflowers and butterflies. She was a lifelong learner and loved to experience other cultures by traveling to foreign countries and trying new foods. She participated in several mission trips, where she distributed food and clothing to people in developing countries.

She was excellent with arts and crafts, especially sewing. She made baby blankets and clothing that were distributed all over the world to expectant moms.

Virginia is survived by her husband, Willie; children, Tom, Jane, Mary (Dave) and Beth; grandchildren, Joe, Jason, Molly (Andrew), Katie, Sarah, Adam, Meg, Jake, and Claire; great-grandson, Jack; and sister Greta.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Ignatius Kessel; and her brother, Kenneth.

Memorials are preferred to Badlands Right to Life.
