Walter M. Bogner, 93, Dickinson, died Monday, October 2, 2017 at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson. Walter’s Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Monday, October 9, 2017 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson with Fr. Shannon Lucht as the celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Dickinson. Military flag presentation will follow the Mass. A visitation with refreshments will be Sunday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. with a rosary and vigil at 4 p.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service with Deacon Kris Ringwall presiding. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
Walt was born on July 20, 1924 in rural Gladstone to Frank J. and Kathryn (Dassinger) Bogner. He graduated from Gladstone High School in 1942. Three years later he joined the Army and was honorably discharged in 1947. He married Florence Schuch on June 28, 1948 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Gladstone. They were blessed with eight children, David, Jon, Brian, Nancy, Paul, Mary, Barb and Steve.
In 1948, Walt opened Bogner Appliance located on 1st Ave. W. in downtown Dickinson, selling and servicing appliances. In 1964, he purchased the Firestone Franchise and Inventory, which was operated at a separate location. In 1968, Walt purchased a building at 115 1st St. E. and moved the appliance and Firestone business into this new location. He owned and operated both businesses until 1977 when the Firestone business was sold and it became Bogner Appliance again which he operated until his passing.
Walt was a member of Queen of Peach Parish from its beginning in 1975. He was one of the earliest Eucharistic Ministers in the parish. He has been a life member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks. Walt was a past member of the Trinity High School Board and he was a past officer of the Odd Fellows. He helped start and was a member of the original Board of Directors at American State Bank.
Walt touched many lives through all of his years in business. He enjoyed and appreciated all of his many customers, many of them becoming good friends. His family found that a father is a strength to lean on, a wisdom to learn from, and an example to live by. A righteous man walks in his integrity and his family is blessed after him. As we celebrate this time we had together we will find the treasures of remembrance and the comfort of believing that life is indeed a gift from God to hold in our memories forever.
Survivors include his wife, Florence, Dickinson; children: Jon (Linda), Dickinson, Brian (Nancy), South Lake Tahoe, Calif., Nancy Rubbelke, Minot, Paul (Sue), Dickinson, Mary (Gerry) Rudnick, Bismarck, Barb Mitchell, Pierre, S.D., and Steve (Jo), Mukilteo, Wash.; 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; brothers: Fran, Minong, Wisc., Dale (Ellen), Ft. Atkinson, Wisc.; sister, Kathy (Jerry) Sullivan, Tucson, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Albert Schuch, Mandan; sisters-in-law, Marie Bogner, Bismarck, Pat Schuch, Colorado Springs, Colo., and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, David; grandson, Jared Rudnick; son-in-law, Robert Rubbelke; brothers: Victor, William, Robert, Eugene and Gerald; sisters, Rosemary and Marcine; father and mother-in-law, George and Magdalena Schuch; five brothers-in-law; and three sisters-in-law.
