Winifred B. DeLong, 91, Dickinson, died Thursday, April 12, 2018 at Miller Point, Mandan. There will be an informal Gathering of Family and Friends from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson. Inurnment will take place at Rosehill Cemetery, Spearfish, S.D.

Winifred Beardshear was born April 26, 1926 at Nemo, S.D., the daughter of Sam A. and Iva (Allan) Beardshear. She was raised in Nemo, and had lived in Spearfish, S.D., Athens, Ohio, and Dickinson.

She had earned a BA Degree from Black Hills State College, Spearfish, and eventually earning a MA and PhD from Ohio University, Athens. She had won a National Defense Fellowship for three years, so she could get her Doctors Degree (having been the only women to have won one). Winifred was a college professor and administrator at Dickinson State for 23 years, retiring in 1990.

Following retirement she was united in marriage to Oscar DeLong on November 29, 1990 at Mesa, Ariz. They made Mesa their home for the next six years when Oscar died on June 29, 1996 she returned to North Dakota.

She enjoyed reading, traveling, handwork and crafts.

Winifred is survived by her children, Vicki (Harley) Schepp, Dickinson, Maridale Sand, Eagan, Minn., and Gerald A. (Sue) Stump, Billings, Mont.; grandchildren, Thomas Cole, Lonny Cole, Wayne Cole, Kimberly Cole, Scott Holtslander, Laura Ficek, Christy Hense, Aaron Stump, Dennis Sand and Eric Sand; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands, Gerald Stump and Oscar DeLong; one daughter, Nancy Seybold; one son, James Stump; and two brothers, Allan Beardshear killed in WWII, and Dale Beardshear.
