Carol Ann Zimmermann, 84, Dickinson formerly Hettinger died with her strong faith and the love of her life Elmer guiding her peacefully home Saturday, October 22, 2016. Carol’s funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, October 29, 2016 at the Hettinger Lutheran Church, Hettinger, with Pastor Charlotte Kvale. Interment will follow at the Hettinger Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the church, and will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m., Friday at the church.
Carol Ann Powell was born November 21, 1931 in Hettinger to Earl and Angeline (Ullevig) Powell. She grew up on the family homestead. Carol was an only child but enjoyed spending her days with her parents and the many animals they had on the family farm. She attended Chandler country school were she rode her horse “Pet” there daily. She attended Hettinger Public High School graduating in 1950. After graduating Carol worked with her dad on the homestead while her mom was recovering at San Haven and until the love of her life Elmer returned from college and they united in marriage on April 6, 1951.
At the young age of 19, Carol and Elmer took over her parents homestead. Carol and Elmer worked side by side for several years before having their son Mark, seven years later they adopted their daughter Nancy. Throughout Carol’s life on the farm she always made sure everyone else’s needs were met before her own. That consisted of getting her hands dirty in the field when needed, making field meals for everyone and always making sure her kids had the best and were taken care of.
In 2000 they retired from the farm and moved into Hettinger. Carol’s time was spent doing what she loved which included being involved in the Hettinger Clothes Closet, quilting club and being active in the Richland Lutheran Church. Carol’s biggest passion was spending time with her grandkids. She loved doing many activities with them from cooking and baking for them to watching their sporting events where she was their biggest fan. She enjoyed watching them grow into the young adults they have become. Throughout Carol’s life her greatest pride was her husband Elmer, having just celebrated 65 years together.
In May 2015, Carol and Elmer made the difficult decision of moving out of their community/home to Dickinson where their daughter and grandkids live.
Carol Ann is survived by her son Mark (Marsha) Zimmermann, Hettinger; daughter Nancy (Wayne) Yates, Dickinson; grandkids, Dustin (Casey) Yates, Cincinnati, Ohio, Ryan Yates, Lexy Yates (Devon Wandler), Dickinson, Amy (Greg) Beck, Dickinson, Leandra Smith, Selby, S.D.; great-grandkids, Liam Ridge Yates, Tucker and Cassie Beck and Tripp Smith; brother-in-law, Henry (Minetta) Zimmermann, Hettinger; sister-in-law, Anita (John) Mansfield, Minneapolis, Minn.; sister-in-law, Lois Zimmermann, Wash.; and numerous cousins and nieces and nephews.
Carol is preceded in death by her husband Elmer; parents; in-laws; brothers-in-law, Chris (Hazel) Zimmermann, Reuben Zimmermann; and brother-in-law, Marvin Mansfield.
