Date of Funeral

Friday, July 3, 2026

Agnes Custer, 97, formerly of Belfield, died on Monday, June 29, 2026 at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, New Rockford. A Mass of Christian Burial for Agnes will be at 10 a.m., Friday, July 3, 2026 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Belfield with Fr. David Richter as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Belfield. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass.

Agnes was born to Steve and Margaret (Zentner) Metz at the family farm southwest of South Heart on January 16, 1929.

Agnes attended country grade school and Model High School in Dickinson. She met and married William “Bill” Custer and married on April 26, 1948 at St Mary’s Catholic Church in South Heart. They then moved to Belfield where they lovingly raised four children. Agnes’s Catholic Faith and Jesus were especially important to her instilling it to her family and praying the rosary daily. Her prayers will be greatly missed. She enjoyed gardening, raising fresh vegetables, canning and making homemade jellies from family berry picking trips to the badlands. Her hobby was collecting salt & pepper shakers from every state and other countries having a collection of around 300 or more. She enjoyed couponing and writing letters to family and friends. Agnes was an excellent cook and baker learning from her mother at an early age on the farm cooking for threshing crews over a woodstove. Her homemade caramel rolls, bread and pies were amazing! Agnes and Bill loved old-fashioned polka music and loved dancing together at weddings.

Family she leaves behind are one son, Dean Custer, New Rockford; three daughters, Kathleen (Dan) O’Meara, Ashland, KY, Arvilla (Dan) Snyder, Salmon, ID, and Rita (Jeff) Leonard, East Bridgewater, MA.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, September 29, 2001; her parents; and numerous brothers and sisters.
