Darryl James Dutke, 72, South Heart, died in the early morning of Saturday, December 3, 2022 surrounded by his family at CHI St. Alexius, Dickinson. There will be a Liturgy of Word Service for Darryl at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 8, 2022 at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, with Deacon Ron Keller presiding. Inurnment will take place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Military honors will be provided by the Belfield American Legion William C. Blair Post 144. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
Darryl James Dutke was born on October 26, 1950 in Dickinson, the son of Walter and Mildred (Zilkowski) Dutke. He was raised in Belfield, having graduated from Belfield High School.
Darryl enlisted in the United States Navy in 1970 and resided in Port Hueneme, CA. On September 8, 1972, he was united in marriage to Shirley Wagner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in South Heart. He was honorably discharged from the United States Navy in 1976 and at that time they moved to South Heart, where he resided until his death. He worked alongside his dad at Franklin’s Fairway Foods in Belfield and he also spent some time driving school bus. Darryl spent the majority of his life working various roles in the oilfield, with 29 years at Halliburton Energy Services, and retiring from Rockpile Energy Services as their HSE Manager in 2016.
Darryl found great joy in maintaining his yard and watching birds, where he spent countless hours after his retirement. His children and grandchildren looked forward to his homemade fudge during the holiday season. Darryl’s hobbies included bowling, archery and watching many old westerns on television, as well as reading many novels. He took special interest in watching the Oregon Ducks Football team and he traveled to Eugene to watch them play. However, his most beloved passion was his interest in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also belonged to the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.
Darryl found great joy in conversing with others and telling jokes. He loved to make people laugh with his witty sarcasm. If you were privileged to meet him, you held a special place in his heart.
Darryl is survived by his wife, Shirley, South Heart; his children, Jason (Sheila) Dutke, Dickinson, Christa (Daniel) Hugelen, Dickinson, Jennifer (Ed) Weigel, Bismarck, Brent Dutke, Dickinson and Ashley Dutke, Bismarck; grandchildren, Abbey and Emily Dutke, Derek (Cassie) Hugelen, Jaren and Easton Hugelen, Mikayla and Austin Kindsfater, and Alex and Asia Dutke; great-grandchildren, Taytum and Tescher Hugelen; siblings, Dennis Dutke, Dale (Janet) Dutke, Del Dutke and Doug (Keely) Dutke; brother and sisters-in-law, Linda (Russell) Doe, Glenn (Dixie) Wagner, Carol (Ron) Thurn; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mildred Dutke; father and mother-in-law, Philip and Doris Wagner; as well as several aunts and uncles.
