George Schmidt, a courageous veteran of the Korean War, a devoted husband, beloved father figure, and cherished grandfather to all, peacefully passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at the age of 92. His life was a testament to resilience, love, and unwavering dedication to his family, community, and country.

Born on July 19, 1931, George answered the call of duty and served his nation with honor and bravery during the Korean War. His selflessness and courage in the face of adversity earned him the respect and admiration of all who knew him, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of his comrades and fellow servicemen.

On December 31, 1990, George found his true partner in Joy Rae (Skjefte) Link, whom he married, forging a bond that would stand the test of time. Together, they shared a life filled with love, laughter, and shared dreams, creating a legacy of devotion that will forever endure.

After his military service, George embarked on a life of farming outside of Dunn Center, where he tended to the land with passion and dedication. His farm was more than just a livelihood; it was a testament to his hard work, perseverance, and deep connection to the earth. Here, he earned the affectionate titles of “grandpa” and “father” from those who knew him, offering guidance, wisdom, and a warm embrace to those in need. He was seen as a kind, generous and honorable man. When his nieces and nephews came to visit the farm, he always made time to include them in the farm activities, riding on the tractors, baling the hay or galloping off on a horse: a joyful and formative time for them.

Upon retiring, George and Joy settled in Killdeer, where they continued to cultivate their deep roots in the community. George remained an active and beloved member of the community, sharing his warmth, kindness, and generous spirit with all who crossed his path. He took on a new passion of restoring Model T’s and Model A’s.

In addition to his dedication to farming and his community, George cherished his role as a family man above all else. He was a devoted husband to Joy, a loving father to his stepchildren, and a cherished grandfather to his grandchildren, whose lives were enriched by his love, guidance, and unwavering support.

Though George has bid farewell to this earthly realm, his memory will live on in the hearts of his beloved family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of love, service, and compassion will continue to inspire and guide us in the days ahead.

George’s Celebration of Life Service will be at 10 a.m., Friday, May 17, 2024 at St. John Lutheran Church, Killdeer. Interment will follow at Dunn Center Cemetery, Dunn Center. Military Honors will be provided by Killdeer American Legion Ezra Barrows Post 46. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the American Legion Auxiliary in honor of George’s lifelong commitment to serving others and his love for his community.

George will be deeply missed but never forgotten. May he rest in eternal peace, knowing that his legacy of love and devotion will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew him.

George is survived by his stepchildren, Howard (Marsha), Gerald (Dawn), Doreen Gregorie and Arnold (Carmen); eight step-grandchildren, Llacye, Kallista, Lainee, Joshua, Gabreille, Taylor, Trenton and Kiley; eight step-great-grandchildren; brother, Leland Schmidt, Dunn Center; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joy, November 22, 2018; his parents, John George and Vina Synthia (Harvey) Schmidt; and siblings, Hazel, Helen, Ruth, Doris, Howard, and Emrel.
