Hazel Voss, 89, Dickinson, died Saturday, November 13, 2010 at the St. Luke’s Home, Dickinson. Hazel’s Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, November 19, 2010 at 10 a.m., at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with Fr. Jim Braaten as the celebrant. Interment will take place at the Killdeer Cemetery, with Fr. Darnis Selvanayakam, MSFX presiding. Visitation will be on Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, with a rosary & vigil at 7 p.m., with Deacon Bob Zent presiding.
Hazel Voss, was born September 30, 1921 on the family homestead near Fayette, to Gustav and Marcella (Kucera) Voss. As a young girl she loved horses and working outside doing everything from farmyard chores to fieldwork. She developed a strong work ethic while on the farm that stayed with her right up until she entered St. Luke’s Nursing Home.
In her early twenties, Hazel treaveled out west and decided to settle in San Diego, Calif. She attended nursing school, shortly after graduation she was hired by Palmar Foods where she worked most of her life. She started out packing pickles and steadily worked her way up until she was promoted into the laboratory where she worked developing recipes for Palmar food products that were sold to restaurants and food outlets. She stayed with the company until her retirement in the late 1980’s. After retiring Hazel cared for various individuals providing in home healthcare. She was a dedicated football fan and enjoyed watching the Chargers and Vikings, and attended many of the Chargers home games.
Hazel moved back to Dickinson in 1993, moving in with her sister, Martha Voss, in 2002. They took care of each other until 2008 when they both moved to Hawk’s Point retirement home. Suffering from pulmonary fibrosis and numerous other ailments, Hazel moved to the St. Luke’s Home in 2009, she appreciated all the help and attention she received from the staff.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Marcella Regeth, Elsie Kukla, and Caroline Voss, and one brother, Albert Voss.
Hazel is survived by her one sister, Martha Voss, St. Luke’s Home; brother-in-law, Henry Regeth, Manning; nieces and nephews, Elaine (George) Laue, Pueblo, Colo., Henry Regeth, Jr., Bothell, Wash., Darlene Fisher, Dickinson, Shirley (John) Thompson, Belle Fourche, S.D., Karol Lesmeister, Reeder, Peggy Regeth, Bismarck, Rick (Cher) Regeth, Manning, and Sandi (Francisco) Knopik, Manning; 19 great-nieces and nephews; and many great, great-nieces and nephews.
