Margaret Temple, 95, formerly of Glendive, Mont., died Sunday, December 8, 2013 at the St. Luke’s Home, Dickinson. Margaret’s funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, December 12, 2013 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickinson with Rev. Lisa Lewton officiating. Interment will take place at the Dawson Memorial Cemetery, Glendive. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. There will be a visitation on Friday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., followed by a prayer service and sharing led by Rev. Avis Anderson at 3 p.m., at Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home, Glendive.
Margaret Christina Lucht was born at Saco, Mont. on September 1, 1918, the daughter of Emil and Catherine (Blue) Lucht. After graduating from high school in Saco, she attended Montana State College at Bozeman for one year. While there, she met Charles Temple and after she returned to Saco to work in the post office for a time, they were united in marriage on February 2, 1940. They lived in Glendive, Mont. until March of 1943 when they moved out to the Temple ranch northeast of Glendive so Charles could help his father since his two brothers were serving in the military in WW II. She resided there until moving in to Glendive after Charles’ death in 1986.
In the fall of 1955 Margaret began dual residency, renting an apartment in Glendive each fall so that her daughters could attend school. She and the girls would return to the ranch weekends to be with Charles, who had to remain there to tend to the cattle. The second winter in town, she began working at the Dawson County treasurer’s office and went on to be elected county treasurer. She continued as treasurer or deputy treasurer until her retirement in March of 1979.
On September 2, 1990, Margaret married Ray Herigstad and continued to live in Glendive until failing health caused her to move to Dickinson, to be near her daughter Janet in August of 2005.
Margaret was a very energetic person and enjoyed many activities in addition to working full time all those years. She was an avid gardener and won many blue ribbons at the Dawson County fair. She belonged to the Belle Prairie homemakers club for many years and Toastmistresses. She loved playing cards of all kinds, bowling, crocheting, cribbage at the senior center in Glendive and bingo at the senior center and quilting with the church ladies in Dickinson in later years.
She is survived by daughters Janet (Pat) Hoerner, Dickinson, and Kathy Temple, West Jordan, Utah; sister Dorothy Helm, Glendive, Mont.; granddaughter Chris (Mike) Biel, Dickinson; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, grandson Jonathan Hledik, and brothers Archie Lucht and Robert Lucht and their wives.
